When in Paris, the smell of vanilla and almonds flutters through the patisserie windows onto the street to tempt passerbys with their refined pastries and fruity tarts.
Although I try and stay away from all things buttery and sugary of the refined kind, a bite sized Macaroon or Macaron (depends if you want to sound French with how you pronounce it) at Ladurée, Paris’s jewel box tea house and macaron shop, is like treating yourself to a piece of jewelry.
The interior of the shop is pale green and gilded gold with refined white marble counters. It makes you imagine you are buying into Marie Antoinette’s life for a half hour.
The flavors range from classics like Chocolate to inventive like Roses, Lilac and Orange Chocolate. I love the rose flavor to make my experience obnoxiously girly.
Fortunately (or unfortunately for those who dislike globalization), La Duree has just opened a new store on West Broadway in Soho serving meals and delicate sweet treats in the newly renovated Barolo space. Secret is out!
