Koreatown is home to tasty, cheap Korean food so when I heard a cooler version opened with a hipster esthetic I had to go and try.. But what I found was sadly not in line with TeresaTastes… it was fatty, oily and overpriced.
HANJAN is Chef Hooni Kim’s second restaurant after Danji, located in the Flatiron District in New York. They use only meats that are hormone and antibiotic free and they believe in paying more for better quality meat so you have to appreciate that.
It may be slightly more conceptual but for the price the food was not delicious enough to merit a special trip or a substitution for the great original Korean spots on 32nd Street like Wonjo. The restaurant itself had a cool interior with industrial details and modern lighting that was well thought out. The staff was personable and accommodating.
They did have a few dishes that were inventive and strong and if you don’t mind a fatty meal or the calories, maybe you’d like to try it.
