FEAST WAS FAB AT FATTY CRAB

BOLD – HEARTY – ASIAN – FUSION

PRICE– MODERATE  VIBE– FUN, COSY

One of the first cold evenings in October and with the change of the season nothing felt more appropriate than some warm, umame, sticky and sweet, asian food. Recommended by a friend I decided to take us to FATTY CRAB, the little West Village hole in the wall. You never know whose culinary taste you can trust but I was prepared to be wowed.

The West Village has a serious lack of good asian eateries and I was excited for this moderately priced Malaysian Fusion Restaurant on Hudson by Horatio.

The lovely hipster waiter was friendly and accommodating and sat us at a table for two in the “very NEW YORK” homey brickwalled simple room. We are told items are to share, specialities are theCrab (you would think) with toast, the Short Ribs with lemongrass and Rendang curry, a Fatty Duck with pickled mustard greens, thai chili and gula jawa and the Malay Fish Fry.

We started with the CHARRED SQUID on top of a heirloom tomato curry, zucchini and summer basils which was bold and chunky, in a “mediterranean meets asia” twist on roasted tomatoes with thai basil on clean lightly sauteed zucchini and then covered with the grilled baby squid. The dish was excellently prepared and unique in every bite. Fresh, and flavourful and lighter for the girls.

Short Rib Rendang | meyer’s beef, lemongrass, gula jawa, pickles - The Short Rib Rendang meyer’s beef, lemongrass, gula jawa, pickles was incredible! Sweet and Meaty, soft, perfectly braised beef with a Rendang Curry Sweet paste on the top and to break up the palette delicious fresh asian pickles. I think this dish gives any hearty Braised Beef a run for its money.

We accompanied it with Wok-Fried Kangkong sambal belacan, shaoxing, – some long string like asian spinach which was spicy, salty; satisfying. A highly recommended by the waiter chicken rice was boring- but its rice, and chicken.. enough said.

Meal for 2 with one appetizer, 2 main courses and a side and a glass of wine cost $120 with a 20% tip. I think the food is great for the price point, service was excellent. Decor was cosy but average. Adventurous ordering and you wont be disappointed.

PS. A friendly flirt with the sweetheart waiter resulted in two drink tickets to try FATTY CUE, their new “meat heavy”, grown up sister restaurant. Will follow up with that cos what girl can turn down a free drink!
