The Famed Masa Restaurant in the Time Warner Centre in Columbus Circle next to Central Park is the most expensive restaurant in New York at about $700 per person. Bar Masa, the little brother in the same Time Warner Centre serves a “easier” version without the extravagances of Gold Flakes and Unchangeable Omakases.

Bar Masa definitely does not come cheap, but serves outstanding quality and fair sized portions.

I went there for a business lunch during New York Fashion Week which was at Lincoln Centre about a 5 minute walk away.

We sat at the bar away from a very loud Naomi Campbell dining with her Russian friends. At this point I realized I must have stepped into the right place then.. or more realistically should be scared for the bill at the end of the meal.

This usually quiet, zen, honey wood coloured sushi bar would only accommodate about 30 guests and was adorable.

The Wasabi Cress Salad ($18) was fresh, crisp and dressed in a creamy wasabi, tofu dressing which reminded me of the Tofu Salad from EN Brasserie. It was generous and served in an ice chilled bowl.

The Tomato and Tofu Salad ($24) was surprisingly chunky, bold had all the flavours of an italian dish with Basil and Olive Oil but the Tofu mimicked a soft delicate mozzarella and was very satisfying.

Then the Omakase of Sashimi ($98) was exquisite. Nice sized pieces made a very healthy light lunch. The Toro (fatty tuna) and Scallop were outstanding. I dared with the Uni (sea urchin) - I shouldnt have as I rarely like it- one taste I will never acquire perhaps.

The cost was about $150 for the meal per person with bottled water. There is a more affordable lunch tasting menu (probably half the price) which we were only made aware of when we left! Typical. Ah well perhaps we will have to go back to dollar cost average as the bankers say…

The Service, Food and Environment was Impeccable but even as Masa’s more “casual” brother it was very expensive and probably best for those company account lunches. An absolute luxury 😉
